The ride

There are loops, and then there is the Sella Ronda — a perfect ring of asphalt strung around one of the most spectacular rock fortresses in the Alps. Four passes. Four valleys. Four different moods. One unforgettable day. Start in Canazei with an espresso while the morning light ignites the Sella towers. Then climb: the Passo Pordoi unrolls its famous switchbacks beneath you, and by the time you crest 2,239 metres the whole of the Dolomites seems to be on parade. Descend to Arabba, all wooden barns and flower boxes, and climb again — Campolongo is the gentle one, a rolling green shoulder that lets you catch your breath before Corvara charms you into a longer stop than planned. Then Gardena happens. The road wriggles up between the Sella massif and the Cir spires, and if you're on a bike you'll taste honey and effort in equal measure; in a car the hairpins stack tighter and tighter until the pass gate releases you into Val Gardena. Selva flutters with Ladin flags, and the final climb to the Passo Sella is short, steep, and glorious — the rock walls so close you feel held by them. The descent home to Canazei is the victory lap: long, flowing, the Marmolada watching over your shoulder the whole way down. Yes, summer traffic is real — motorbikes, cyclists, the occasional coach. Go early, ride anticlockwise, and treat the jam-packed summit car parks as an excuse to linger over strudel. Because the Sella Ronda isn't about pace. It's about circling a mountain the whole world loves, and being grinningly part of it.
