The ride

Some roads go somewhere. The Nivolet road goes nowhere at all — and that is precisely its genius. Colle del Nivolet is a dead end at 2,641 metres, one of the highest paved points in Italy, and every kilometre of the approach through the Gran Paradiso National Park feels like the mountains are saving the best for someone who bothered. Start from Ceresole Reale, where the dam holds back a lake the colour of jade, and climb. The valley tightens, the larches close in, and then the road bursts onto the high plateau — and you will never have seen anything like it. Turquoise glacial lakes scattered across a tundra floor, marmots whistling on the rocks, ibex silhouetted on the ridgelines, and the road threading through it all like a pale ribbon dropped from the sky. This is the Alps as they were before we arrived. The hairpins stack up toward the sky, the air gets thin and cold and incredibly clean, and finally the pass: a notch in the rock with the whole of the Graian Alps marching away to the west. Beyond the barrier, footpaths wander off toward the Nivolet lakes — the true roof of this place. Stand still. Listen. There is no traffic noise, because there is nowhere further to drive. Just wind, water, and the distant crack of ice. Then turn around and drive it again — because the view going back down is somehow even better, the road unspooling below you through scenery that has no business being this beautiful this close to Turin. Dead end? Best dead end in the Alps.
